Japan Enhances Global Scientific Collaborations Through New JST Initiative

Tokyo, Wednesday, 28 May 2025.
The Japan Science and Technology Agency announced a strategy to strengthen international collaborations, aiming to integrate Japanese researchers with global networks for innovation and advancement.
JST’s New International Strategy
On May 27, 2025, the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) rolled out a strategy enhancing its focus on global scientific collaboration to bolster Japan’s research position internationally. This initiative aims to deepen connections between Japanese researchers and their global counterparts, fostering innovation and development in line with Japan’s long-term science and technology objectives [1].
Expanding Global Networks
As part of this initiative, the JST plans to leverage programs like EIG CONCERT-Japan and the e-ASIA JRP to unite European and Asian scientific efforts with Japan’s own [2]. This marks a significant move towards addressing international scientific challenges through shared expertise and resources. The agency’s commitment includes increasing science and technology funding by 20% over the next five years, positioning Japan at the forefront of global scientific innovation [3].
Collaborative Projects and Expected Outcomes
To date, the JST has launched six collaborative projects involving North America, Europe, and Asia, each aiming to push the boundaries of scientific fields ranging from life sciences to semiconductor technology [4]. The agency foresees significant advancements in these sectors, driven by the synergetic potential of international cooperation [5]. Between now and December 2025, JST is particularly focused on developing innovations in renewable energy as part of these collaborative endeavors [6].
Japan and ORCID Partnership
Additionally, JST has partnered with ORCID Inc. to promote the use of unique researcher identifiers, strengthening researchers’ global presence and enhancing visibility in international databases [7]. This partnership underscores the JST’s strategy to not only participate in but also lead global scientific dialogues and breakthroughs. The Japan-ORCID agreement, signed in March 2025, is a strategic move intended to bolster the international mobility and recognition of Japanese scientists [8].
